HEAD ON 2014 EXHIBITION
OUT of TIME. OUT OF PLACE
Out of Time, Out of Place is a joint exhibition by Suellen Symons, Teresa Parker and Tom Truong.
The exhibition is a collaboration of works, with explorations from the Antarctic, to the Australian sea and harbour side to urban landscapes.
Teresa Parker takes us on a journey to the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth, Antarctica. Like the early Australian photographer Frank Hurley, she experienced a land of spectacular scenery, with its unique animals and marine life, a location where you may feel somewhat out of place. Since 1959, the Antarctica has had regulations in place to preserve and monitor the environment of our southernmost continent. Scientists insist we must keep focusing our studies in the Antarctic.
Suellen Symons has sought to create Surreal dream-like landscape scenes from childhood memories as panoramas taking her out of time and out of place into a memoir, focusing on the Australian seaside and bush. Throughout the landforms including the enchanting Lord Howe Island, blue mountains gleam in the distance, clouds move enigmatically overhead, echoing perhaps a Dobell or Drysdale in intense saturated colour, while the sea beckons hauntingly. There is a sense of unease in the enchantment of the Garden of Eden.
Tom Truong has captured the contemporary urbanisation of man, influenced by the Australian painter, Jeffery Smart. He will be exhibiting various works paying respect to the late Smart, including his Wandering Drew series based on a portrait of a character wandering around the urban Australian landscape that is out of time and out of place, and trapped in a rapid changing environment. Our environment is forever changing, with our planet constantly adapting to ongoing physical and biological influences.
This exhibition highlights areas of our past and present, and our effects on the environment, posing questions about the future and global warming on our heritage.
